Downy Woodpecker

I’ve been reading the comments on my fellow bloggers’ posts about woodpeckers. Many people are learning about them, which is fantastic. Last Sunday, while out snow showing with B in Wenham, we were happy to find this little Downy.

The top picture is a beautiful scene! Right out of a storybook.

The little Downys are so cute. We have a bunch of them this year! I have yet to see a Hairy at our suet though. Seems they are much more scarce.

Sharon, I haven't seen a Hairy since I got back east two years ago. I find that to be a little surprising.

Craig, you will start to see the difference eventually. With black and white woodpeckers, the back is a good first clue. Then the face patterns and bill sizes. Soon you'll be calling them in your sleep!

My advice to folks starting out is to find a place that is active and go there once per week. Soon you will see birds in the same general location and you will start to learn their calls. Give it a go.

They are really lovely birds Steve. We hear our woodpecks but very seldom see them as they are very secretive.

Is that B in that first stunning photo?? Hi B!!
I'll never forget the first time I saw a Downy with a Hairy Woodpecker at the feeder...I was shocked when I realized I could have been seeing Hairys for years and never knew it...a lot like the Mallard, Black Duck mixup!!

Downys are very mannerly and sweet. I can't resist them.

Hi Joan, Our woodpeckers can be a little more bold...like pecking on the side of the house!

No Eve, that's not B, that was someone snowshoeing down the road. I thought he brought perspective to the photo.

Mary, I agree. Downys are fun little birds. I have an affinity for woodpeckers. Sometimes I feel like I'm banging my head against a tree too!

Such a pretty little bird! I'm not really a birder, although I do love to read about the birds I see in my own backyard. Love all the woodpeckers. That first landscape photo is stunning!
