Woodchuck

Woodchucks are vary wary when it comes to humans. Let’s face it, they are considered varmints. I was standing over a woodchuck hole while I was shooting some maple flowers. I saw a little nose poke out of the hole. I was literarily standing right over the hole shooting straight down. We played this game for about 15 minutes. I guess it was just a curious about me as I was about it. The first two were shot with my 24-85mm kit lens.

The last shot was taken with my 300mm F/4.

Nightlights

For today’s Forgotten Photo Friday, I’m going to a recent trip up to Cape Neddick in York, Maine to post two more images from the trip when the full moon rose over “The Nubble”.

One bird’s trash is another bird’s treasure

I was staking out a post that was frequented by a pair of tree swallows. A Chipping Sparrow came in with a mouth full of nesting material. Then it just dropped it on the post. It flew off and left it behind.

When the tree swallows came back, the female immediately picked it up and took it into the nest box.

Highlights

I admit it. I do not shoot very many people. But I do pay attention to how photographers photograph people in the studio. Why? Because they bring great ideas to the table. As wildlife shooters, we cannot always have front on lighting. Heck, I’ll even shoot in the middle of the day. Check out these three high noon shots. You got to be fearless with the life.

Forgotten Photo Friday, Fort Square at night

Night photography can be a lot of fun. Here is a photo that I forgot about that I took in August 2011.

Be fearless with the light

I sat on a bench with a White-breasted Nuthatch. The bench was on the side of a trail through a swamp by a pond that was being enhanced by beaver activity. I saw the way the late morning light was hitting the scene. You would never know just how harsh this light was. I’m particularly jazzed at the way the colors came out in these. You have to be fearless with the light.

Veery

I’m having an above average Thrush year. Earlier this year I got some pretty good Hermit Thrush images. Today I am please to present to you a Veery that I shot at Appleton Farms. I spent about 10 minutes with this bird. Or maybe it just seemed that time stood still.

This Veery has earned entrance into the Cock-of-the-Rock club.

Wood Anemone

These were taken in one of my favorite patches of Wood Anemone.

Not too far from that patch is a patch of some other flowers, perhaps a feral cultivar.

Forgotten Photo Friday, It was the start of a bad day.

These are the two towers on Thacher Island as seen from Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, Massachusetts. I remember getting up early and going out for a photo shoot. These were the colors as the sun was coming up. It was the start of a bad day with a big storm coming in.

Ovenbird

If you have ever walked through the forests of New England in the summertime, you probably have heard this bird, but may never have seen it. I can remember hearing this bird as a boy. To me it was the sound of summer. This is the forth time that I have actually seen one.

Spring pastels

The pastels of spring are ephemeral. In a day or two, these will be gone.
