Slaty Skimmer action shots

Today, for those of you that have ventured over to SMU, I have some Slaty Skimmers for you. First up is a male shot with ISO 250.

Next up is the very same bug shot later at ISO 1250. What what I thinking? ISO 1250 for a dragon shot?

Well I had a reason. This male was guarding his territory and this was his favorite place. It was hanging over the edge of a slow moving stream. He was guarding a female that he just mated with as she was ovipositing, which happens in the blink of an eye.

The image below is the the shot that I like the best. In order to overcome the technical challenges, I shot these without flash, ISO 1250, 1/3200 of a second. That’s why the above shot was at such a high ISO. Yet the detail remains.

Just to give you an idea of how fast this happens, here are three consecutive shots taken as fast as the camera would go.
