Juvenile Gulls in Flight

Saturday I took my gear out to State Fish Pier in Gloucester, Massachusetts to see what I could find. I was fortunate enough to find some of our winter gulls flying around. These were all shot on 8Feb 2014.

First up is a first winter Iceland Gull. This is a winter bird for us. We usually get immature birds.

Here we have a first winter Great Black-backed Gull. This bird will spend his whole life here.

This is a second winter Iceland Gull.

See that it is stocky and has smaller bill compared to our other gulls.

This is a first winter Glaucous Gull. Not that the eye is completely black and the bill is heavier that the Iceland.

The Iceland gull is a good 5 inches smaller than the Glaucous. A good indication of what you are looking at can be found in the bill size and shape. Below on the left are Iceland Gulls and on the right are Glaucous gulls.
