Western Scrub Jay

Here’s another one of my old friends from the west. This is a Western Scrub Jay, a member of the crow family.

Steve, we actually had a Western scrub jay live in our neighborhood for about 3 years! We are 12 minutes (as the crow flies) from the pinyon forest in our local mountains (above Palm Desert). I think he "blew in" one day after a wind storm. He took up residence and treated us all to his songs and shenanigans! He LOVED acorns and I would drive up there to collect some for him. He disappeared one spring (perhaps to find a mate?) but reappeared (alone)...I would put peanuts on our side fence for him. He'd know exactly when I was arriving home each afternoon and would reappear and squawk at me to feed him! He was a real character...UNFORTUNATELY, a pair of Cooper's hawks also moved into the neighborhood and THAT was the end of him and countless doves...sigh...I miss him! I called him "Burt". I never did really get a GOOD photo of him...I have some, but he just wouldn't hold still! Little bugger!
