Saturday morning was sort of cloudy, drizzly, rainy, foggy crappy but warm. So what do you do? Head into Gloucester, of course. I found myself on State Fish Pier looking over the North Channel. There was a group of birders there. It was a bit different than the group of birders that I usually see. They were mostly adolescents. I asked the group leader where they were from. It turned out that they were on a Mass Audubon sponsored trip that originated from Lincoln, Massachusetts and were taking an annual trip to Gloucester.
Now Gloucester is a really great place to come for winter birds. Here is a case in point. In the middle of the North Channel was this Thick-billed Murre. And he was headed our way!
He was just happy to swim buy the pier. We followed him from the west side as he swam along the south side over to the east side.
What fun! Now I will not promise you a Murre every time you come to Gloucester! I have been to this location many a time and the weather sucked but you just never know what you’re going to find.
Be sure to visit Wild Bird Wednesday this week!
