Terns at Cranes Beach

One of the coolest things about moving to Ipswich is that we qualify for a Cranes Beach beach sticker. Totally fricken cool. And since it is on my way home from work, I can pop in for an hour to decompress. On a day like this, the beach will be mine!

This is a good sign. This Willet is hanging out on the boardwalk rail.

This is my favorite beach. Why? Terns. I’ll bet there is a lifer in there. Let’s take a look. Hmmm…they all look pretty “Common” to me.

Wait a minute…do you see it? One of these terns looks a little un-Common. (Yes, I just used the same pun twice. Sorry.)

Shoot. Up they go.

Okay, everyone has settled down again. There! Do you see it?

Right THERE!

It is a Roseate Tern.

That’s a life bird. Here are a couple of Common Terns playing leap frog.

This is just a cool shot.

Finally, to round out the shoot, here is a Least Tern. Easy-peasy.

Be sure to visit Wild Bird Wednesday. You’ll be glad you did.

A cool location and great birds Steve.

Am I right in thinking this is an important site for breeding Piping Plover?

A great series of photos. Terms are always interesting to watch and challenging to ID.

My head is still terning from that lot but they certainly tern me on. Congrats on your lifers. How can you find peace on that beach? In my book it was over-populated, it has someone on it!
