I’ve got a treat for you today. This is Great Horned Owl that I photographed in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve just north of Palm Springs, California. It’s just a great place to bird.

Now that we’re living in the sticks, we are having some fun new wildlife. A couple of times, we had a female Great Horned Owl hooting outside our bedroom window, maybe 50 yards away. She called to here mate which sounded like he was about a quarter of a mile away. She then flew off in his direction. I could hear them calling to each other much further down the road.
There is a difference in pitch between a male and a female. The males are lower pitched. I haven’t been able to spot them yet. They have been calling at 5:30am.

Smashing Steve, what a bird!!! Damn twigs....the bane of the photographer!!! (-: Are you still near to where you lived before, but maybe more inland?
So beautiful Steve.
I guess that makes for a great alarm clock :) What a beautiful owl!!!
I hear you all may be getting some snow in this weekend.....stay safe!
Hi Kerri, We'll be okay, it's nothing we have'nt seen before.
Thanks Carrol,
Jenny, We are in Ipswich, Massachusetts which is still in Essex county. We live on the coast, but are protected by a salt marsh.
Great horned owls are wonderful. We had a pair around here for a while, but I haven't heard them in quite some time. Used to see one or the other flying around or hanging out in the trees and hear them hooting at night.
I hope you guys are ok and that the weather didn't knock out your power.
It would be soo neat to see them!! Or hear them! I haven't done that, even.
I know the horns are feathers, but can they be moved? this guy looks angry, and it seems to be the set of his horns...
Hermosas capturas...y ya que no dejan dormir, pues nada mejor que tomar la cámara y sacar fotos...Y la prçoxima vez que no te dejen dormir podrás lanzarle dardos a la foto :-)...
Preciosos ejemplares...
Abrazotes y buena semanita
