Forgotten Photo Friday, The Black Bug

Last May when we vacationed in Newport Beach, California, I came across this beetle that had the goofiest defense posture. I’m not sure what his game is, but I guess he thinks it is intimidating. It’s probably worked for millions of years, what ever it is.

Maybe you scared him so much that he's trying to hide his head. LOL! I just wouldn't want to find him in my house!

It is a Darkling Beetle, very common out west especially in the deserts. Sometimes called a stink bug for that is exactly what he is threatening to do in this position. They emit a very irratating fine spray that potential predators will immeadiatly back away from. Sinbad watches them from a distance but has never been sprayed. He some how knows not to mess with them.

He's a California beetle...doing yoga. You likely destroyed his Zen.

I like the way you captured him and his shadow! Reading Sinbad and I's comment about spraying - that is kind of the way a skunk sprays, too.
