Encounter between the Ardelle and the Thomas E. Lannon

©2011 Steve BorichevskyI took a public sail Sunday afternoon on the Ardelle. Launched just this year, the Ardelle was built and is owned and operated by Harold Burnham out of the Maritime Heritage Center here in Gloucester. I’ve been wanting to do this since Schooner Festival weekend and finally, everything lined up.

The Ardelle is a Pinky Schooner, so named from the pinched stern which surrounds the rudder which is controlled by a tiller. The weather was very warm as we are having above normal temperatures, even for the traditional New England Indian Summer. A warm breeze took us out to Norman’s Woe where the Thomas E. Lannon caught up with us.

This is our crew, Perry on the far right in blue and Zack in green.

Looking over the stern, we see that we are being tailed!

Captain Tom Ellis at the helm has been sailing the Lannon since 1997. The Lannon was built by Harold.

The sun behind the Lannon gives her passengers a wonderful view of the Ardelle.

With the Lannon off our Starboard, we get a wonderful photo op of the Lannon.

A nice “ooooo-aahhh” shot.

As the sun sets, the sails are furled and we motor back into the inner harbor.

At a later date, I’ll show you some of the sights. I in the mean time, get over to Gloucester and take a sail on one of these two schooners. They will be shutting down for the off season soon.

This seems like a good time to introduce my 2012 Schooner Calendar featuring the Ardelle, the Thomas E. Lannon and ten other schooners! Order off of this link and receive a 10% discount.
