Saturday evening Creature Feature

I had three juvenile Barn Swallows sitting on the wire outside the house.

They were just sitting and preening.

It’s migration time and an adult came in to get the kids on the move.

I was surprised to see juvy barn swallows so late in the year. Is this normal for you? Down here at Anahuac NWR on the Upper Texas Coast, our barn swallows finished breeding by the end of June and then left their nesting area in July. We still have them on the refuge, but in much fewer numbers and closer to water - about 80 - 90% of normally wet areas are dry.

Thanks folks.

It is not unusual for us to see swallow in mid September. They are gathering up and gettign ready to go. Plus I think we are getting some migrating from further north.
