Western Venture

Gloucester is home to the Western Venture. She is a purse seiner and midwater trawler that fishes with the Osprey for herring and mackerel. The boat is 164' x 40'.

For the Tim Taylors out there, the Western Venture is tricked out with two 590-kW Caterpillar 3412 gensets (generator set, a generating system comprising a combustion engine driving an electrical generator) and nine 132-kW electric motors for driving hydraulic pumps. Under the hood is a pair of 1,500-hp Caterpillar 3512s driving ZFW/7500 marine gears with 5.5:1 ratios that turn 86-inch four-bladed props on 8 1/2-inch shafts. Huh-huh-huh! Fully loaded, the Western Venture still does 12 to 12.5 knots.

To get into those tight parking spaces she has a 250-hp bow thruster and a 350-hp stern thruster. Here the Western Venture in docked at State Fish Pier in Gloucester tending to some maintenance on her nets.
