Tree Swallows

I was walking along the Hellcat Boardwalk on Plum Island and I came across a flock of tree swallows chillaxing on the reeds. They spooked up but I didn’t realize what was going on. The flock spooked from the back first. That didn’t make sense to me, for if I spooked them, the ones closest to me would have flown away first.

OoooooOOOOOOooh! Now I get it! It was a Peregrine Falcon. It was such an awe-inspiring sight that it soared over me and away before I came to my senses and picked up the camera.

Wow excellent for the two spotting and the pictures. The tree swallow are gorgeous and I love these two shots, but the flyinh peregrine is a bonus. Well done Steve.

Nice photos of the swallows; you got that green iridescence that is so tough - and the falcon! At our hawk watch, even when I have my camera ready, they come and go in a flash. Also - good pics from Germany - and stunning waxwings!

Fantastic shot Steve. The only time I see a falcon or a hawk is out on the highway and I'm going to fast to stop and took a pic. Love the swallows. There's something so unsual about that bird that I adore. Carol

Great shots all.
I do that all the time. Stand there while somethings happening, camera in hand and usually come to my senses too late!

Lovely light on the Swallow shots Steve.
Yes those Peregrine are just so fast, you don't get a second chance with them.

I love how the swallows look like ornaments set atop little posts; very cool! And peregrines are such special birds. I have the good fortune of having a nest box on a building near my 12th floor office. I get to see the falcons catching their prey and bringing it to the top of my building to pluck it. Sometimes I look out my window to see a "snowfall" of feathers. Very exciting also to see the fledglings try out their wings. I never get tired of seeing these birds. Your photo is great, showing all the detail of the underwing.
