Plum Island Light and Purple Martins

 ©2010 ShootingMyUniverse

On the grounds of Plum Island Light are martin houses.  There are several pairs of nesting Purple Martins.

This is the female.

And here is the male.  Soon they will be bringing in hundreds of insects to feed the chicks.

I just love those PM's! Recently my daughter and I went to that side of the island. The martins had just started coming in so it was fun watching them.

Great photos. If they run out of insects send 'em down here, 'k? Actually, hundreds of them roost in the trees beside the lake and eat tons of midges and mayflies, when the mayflies hatch. It's a sight!

Marvelous shots! I'm so used to seeing lighthouses surrounded by water, so this one is a bit unusual. You certainly live in an interesting place.

Hi Steve,

Five Purple Martins just fledged from my backyard set-up (same plastic gourds as you've pictured), only 1-2 hours ago! I was just out watching them soar overhead. Obviously they have a different schedule down here in north Florida. Thanks for your pleasantly incidental post, lovely photos as always. Your blog with its photos of two of my best-loved subjects, birds and New England, is one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing your work with us. Leecia

Amazing colours on those Martins Steve. They look to be quite a bit bigger than any of our Martins.
