Dogtown Raccoon

I don’t see many raccoons during the day.  I saw this little fellow stumbling around the woods in Dogtown.  Raccoon 4-24-2010 10-45-36 AM Raccoon 4-24-2010 10-45-39 AM Raccoon 4-24-2010 10-46-00 AM

Hey, wake up sleepyhead!

Daytime raccoon sightings aren't common. Was he/she okay, you think? I know they're pesky creatures but I think they're so cute!

Sadly, when you see a daytime raccoon, you must think caution. Unless something has specifically roused the creature, rabies is a more common issue.

The nursing mothers will often be seen in the daytime as they head out for a short time to eat. Also when the young raccoons (or kits)start moving about and learning the ropes they only revert to the night shift in the late summer or fall. Daytime sighting does NOT in itself indicate a sick animal.

S/he does look a bit disoriented by all that bright light. Could be just my ignorance about raccoons though. This looks like a young one (see previous caveat).

Nice job on the photos though!

I too wondered about this Racoon’s health. It seemed a bit groggy and I did make a bit of noise to let it know I was there rather than try to work with it to get some better shots. It ambled off. Although it was moving slowly, it wasn’t staggering or bumping into things.

I just see the mischief in those little eyes!

I have had them raiding the birdfeeders in the day.

Interesting photos! I am surprised you got so close to it!
I really like the chickadee photos a few posts ago! They can become very friendly if they are exposed to people a lot. There are a couple of walking trails where chickadees will perch on your hand in the winter, if you have seed!

Ahhh...a cute little one. We had a baby hanging around the feeders during the day last year. I was worried about rabies too, but he seemed fine.

Steve, cute shots of the raccoon. They are a real pain coming on my deck at night to raid my bird feeders.
