Smackin' the hickory nut

This Red-bellied Woodpecker has a hickory nut.

I watched him for a while. He took it up to an old knot hole and wedged it in and started to work on it. I've eaten these hickory nuts before. I needed a hammer to get to the meat.

Great captures, Steve. We used to hear these when we lived on the west coast of Scotland, but never saw them close up. Thanks for sharing:)

Amazing shots, Steve. I once watched a Red Headed Woodpecker dispatch some huge bug and thought "glad that's not me." Fierce weapons, those sledgehammer beaks.

Great shot of the woodpecker. A bit different from the one where I live.
