Forgotten Photo Friday, Gambel's Quail

Can you believe that we spent a week in Palm Springs, CA and I'm still posting photos from that trip to the desert? Sure enough, this is the Gambel's quail. You can hear him call, ru-ear, ru-ear, in the background of my blue sky tutorial.

I'm soooooo enjoying your California photos when they come up Steve. We saw these on our trip in 2005, they're real characters arnt they! (-:

I was going to ask an impertinent question - why Gambel's and not Calif? But one of your birds clearly shows the dark patch on the lower belly - range maps don't show them overlapping, and then I realized that Palm Springs in inland. Probably some overlap. You made me pay attention to a number of factors. Loved seeing the Gambel's when I was in AZ in Jan.

'zackly Chris, that's the Gambel's. There is a slight difference in the face, too. I though it was a California Quail also at first. I had to throw out some video because I was yapping away about the California Quail that I was following up a dry wash. When I got into the "dark room"...oops! I've noticed that the Black-tailed Gnatcatcher isn't supposed to be in Palm Springs either according to the Sibley map, and I caught them with youngsters. Oh well, they have wings, they can go where ever they want! I'll post a female California quail tomorrow. I think it has a male's face in the picture.

Jenny Wren, you'll just have to book a flight and get a birding fix to steady your nerves!

Richard, I take lots of crappy pictures! Trust me. Remember my April Fools day post?

Thanks Dawn, Eve and John.

You bet, Joan, I've still have a couple of aces up my sleeve.

I can believe it Steve, I have so many photos from previous trips that I haven't shown. These photos of the Gambel's Quail are fantastic.

I've been hoping to see a quail some day. You mean I just need to drive down to Palm Springs? :-) Great shots.

Hi Denise, You are exactly right.

Hi SHaron, She's pretty good about it.

Hi 2sweetnsaxy, you can go up in the San Jicintos and see some Mountain Quail too. Palm Springs for Gambels. I've seen quail up at Bodega Bay by Pebble Beach.
