Common Loon

In contrast to the Red-throated Loon, the more common loon in Gloucester Harbor is the Common Loon. Unfortunately, they leave before breeding time, so we don't get to hear them call.

Great shots. I don't think I have ever seen a loon. Helen

Fabulous shots Steve, this is the same as our Great Northern Diver and we only see them in winter too, usually distantly out at sea. I would so love to see them up close, which I now have on your blog! (-:

I love them very much... We do have divers like red-throated and great northern divers and they are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Chris, Glad to have you stop by. I guess you and Jenny share the Northern Great Diver. How cool is that!

Helen and Nina we got to get you up to cold country in the Atlantic North East.

Howdy Kim, yup, I even got the color of the eye in that one.

Wow...such a nice capture! The first shot with the water dripping off his lunch is gorgeous! I've yet to see a loon. I hope to this year.

Yes, the first pic is great meal shot, but the last one is great lighting at the eye.

Great shots. I'd love to catch one catching a fish. And the water looks wonderful in these.

I love loons! I usually see them in the summer at the lake I visit but have never seen them in their nonmating colors. I had a great close encounter with a loon a couple of summers ago. If your interested my story is on my blog http://longingformaine.blogspot.com Thanks for all your great pictures.

Hi Cindy, wow, you are a long way from home, if not geographically, but spiritually. Glad I could bring some happiness to your desktop.
