Forgotten Photo Friday, "Hey, wait a minute..."

I went down to Eastern Point on the twelfth of December and came across these three ducks feeding. Thinking that they were just Mallard hens, I didn’t pay too much attention to them.

“Hey, wait a minute”, one protested. “We’re not Mallards. Look at my wing bars. They are blue.”

“Here, look under my wings, white as snow. We’re not Mallards, we’re American Black Ducks!”

How cool. This is a life bird for me.

I would've thought they were female mallards too, great shots.

You are getting mighty good Steve!! Those Black Ducks were really giving you a good lesson weren't they!!

Great shots Steve. Never seen one of these birds.

Great shots. I love how blue the water looks. They look like female mallards to me too.

What a great way to get a life bird Steve and so unexpected. The light was beautiful too.

Just proves how important it is to save those 'ordinary' shots just in case. Congrats on another lifer Steve.

And to think you might not have noticed! They're very elegant birds and would be lifers for me, too.

Lovely photos, Steve.

I certainly learned to be more observant when it comes to Mallard hens. It's like The Early Birder says, keep your photos!

Yes, Jenny. I was reading Kim's blog and she was asking for help identifying a duck. I looked at it and knew it wasn't a mallard. Then it clicked...hey, I saw some of these a couple of weeks ago. When I got home, sure enough!

Hi Mary, I've got a few more birds like this I need to add to my list. Like those little Flycatchers that all look alike.

Hi John and Richard...When I visited Eastern Point last weekend, I took a closer look. They are a little darker than Mallards and the ones I saw didn't show any wing bars while in just a floating position.

How exciting! And they are so beautiful, with those colorful wings. :)

Interesting Steve. Funny but I'm wondering if I saw the same birds this past fall? I know they weren't mallards but I couldn't tell what they were. Maybe I'll post one of the pictures sometime for you to see.

I'm a little surprised that this is a life bird for you. I see them with regularity when I am home. Try Ocean Street in Manchester. You will see them more often at Black Beach than at White Beach, but I most often see them on the stream running through the salt marsh there.

Have you ever seen the harlequin ducks off of Marmion Way in Rockport?
