Elephant Seal

During our trip to California, I was hoping to find some elephant seals to bring back as trophies. Año Nuevo State Park is spitting distance from Pigeon Point. The elephant seals have breading grounds there, but access is limited by reservations and they were booked. I was afraid I'd come home empty handed in the elephant seal department.

During our visit to Pigeon Point, I was looking for a vantage point to shoot the lighthouse from. There was a little observation deck tucked away in the corner of the property that overlooked a cliff to the sea. When I got there, there was a young bull just chillin' about 35 feet bellow. I was able to squeeze off just one shot before he went back under. He floated about for 20 minutes but never posed again before we had to go.

Isn't he handsome ... in an elephanty sort of way. Talk about a lucky shot! So glad you were able to get what you were looking for, Steve.

Very nice : )

Wow Steve that is pretty cool! It took me a minute to figure out just where his face was! He's kind of upsidedown, eye closed, and just a wee smile on there!!! Maybe he thought you would throw a fish at him!

Yes, when I pulled up the preview in on the camera, I couldn't tell which way he was pointing! His eyes are closed at the water line on the right and his mouth is on the left under the nose. Yup, he's taking it easy. Perhaps next year he will be trying to take some cows. He will get a pounding for his efforts. Chill out while you can, big boy, next year is going to be rough!
